George Abang Tawoh carried out a field study from December 1st to 30th with five volunteers to find out whether some children in Idenau District, Buea and Limbe Central where victims of child labour, trafficking, abuse and prostitution and to identify the Abusers or Traffickers. Wirtum Carine and Mr. The aim of this program was to better understand by defining and documenting the problems faced by children in Cameroon in the context of child labour, traffic, abuse and prostitution to get their input into possible strategies to address these problems in the targeted area in Fako Division.
A team of two women and three men where trained by APWCR and a field testing exercise was conducted where all team member work jointly in a three randomly selected quarters in Limbe in the Fako Division for one day. After examination of preliminary findings and addressing any difficulties experienced, the team left for the field.
These areas were selected because of the perception that these beach areas where the areas where child labour, traffic, abuse, prostitution is rampant. Children who spent all their childhood working in the local fishing Industries with, no right to education in school.
The field research identified individuals who were Mistresses and masters of child labour especially in the local fishing industries and further identified trafficked children. The identified cases of trafficked children who were then, brought and exploited as labourers in the local fishing industries was alarming in Idenau, Eyenge and Down Beach Limbe about cases with about 50 Mistresses and Masters. The field research was then followed with a working session with the divisional delegate for social affairs Fako, the District Head Idenau and the company commander Gendarmarie Limbe to validate the data.
Another problem for the research was that some of the identified children ranging from the ages of 07 to 14 trafficked from neighbouring countries in Cameroon like, Nigeria, Ghana, Benin and some villages in Cameroon to this local fishing industries had very poor working conditions. Our study shows that many children have lost their lives due to when the oil of the fish ignite with fire and because of the fatigue, at their tender age fall asleep beside the oven while the fire ignite and consume the oven and the building.
